Fasting has beautiful benefits 1 Year, 9 Months ago
*Edited*: 2/6/09-
Well, I decided to try to post some right after my fast pic. I will have to get into my other computer to retrieve the before my fast photos, and more of the after photos. I'm currently back to my fast beginning tomorrow gung-ho! So, I wish everybody luck and myself .

**I'm leaving this board, for good this time, so I took my pic with me. I don't feel welcome here, and I don't have time for "perfect" people with "ALL the answers" like Dr. Kruger, etc....2/16/09

So neat, did you change your diet in addition to fasting?

Thanks. Yes I did change my diet. I cut out the following of all: Carbs (except fiberious carbs, vegetables and fruits), Fats, and Sugar. I used sparingly all sugarless products, because they trigger my sugar-tooth.

Thanks! That's why I'm here to tell everyone that weight loss can be done with fasting. I know the feeling of failure of trying everything to lose it. I tried just about everything like: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, many different diet pills, Laxatives, Gym Memberships, Atkins, you name it I tried it. I tried too by sticking in there with it, but it didn't work with the results that I needed.

Fasting is the best method hands down to lose your weight. From my experience and observation, a person first of all gain the most important thing needed most for a lifetime change, and that is self-disclipline--this is imperative to achieve any new change. Another is your relationship with food. You see who the enemies are within the food world and you take it very seriously to absolutely change your eating habits. I thought that I could embrace my old eating habits after I lost the weight, but that is wrong. I snacked like crazy and uncontrollably, but pounds creep back on, thus it makes one feel they are okay because you don't see it immediately. So, abby I took on the correct approach with my relationship with food and went back to the basics of eating properly and eating for nutrition not for taste.

Well, I wish you the very best, and you can and will DO IT!!! Because if I can do it, anyone can. I have no great qualities of control about myself, when you fast and do the type of fast for you, you will achieve beautiful results.

Now, what I want you and everyone else to do is to keep it up and never ever give up, just switch gears and do a different fast if a certain way isn't working for you. I utilize the combo method, this works for me. Get thinspirations pictures of the size you desire to be, ignore your ego telling you that you are only dreaming. You must dream, and keep envisioning where you want to be (the clothes size, how you will feel once you're there, etc...) to succeed; because without a vision you can't get to where you want to be.

Please never give up!!! I'm around if you need someone who understand.

Good Luck!!!! You can do it!!! And achieve the exact results that you desire.

P.S. I have NO hanging skin, my body snapped back.

Epiphany, a fasting friend.

Hi Epiphany!
Not sure if you're still using this site but I was just looking for before and after photos for inspiration and read your post below, which has me inspired! I have been at least slightly overweight my whole life (now 22), but am currently 71kg looking to reach 55kg. After all my failed diet attempts (hundreds im sure) there is always a nagging voice telling me I can't do it, skinny jess will never happen etc....BUT i've started jogging/power walking again (about 5km a day) and have been doing a fruit and veg detox for a few days and have lost 2kgs already. Then I got an email saying a water fast is starting on Monday and i've replied to joing because the weight loss is so appealing! I can't see any of your pics, but it sounds like you've had good success and i just basically wanted any tips? Also what is 'combo fasting'? And what is your opinion regarding activity during a water fast, and length of water fasts? I'm concerned about the detox effects!
Thank you
Jess

Yes I'm back I had a loooong spell away. When I get the chance I will post them again.

Also what is 'combo fasting'? And what is your opinion regarding activity during a water fast, and length of water fasts?

Well Jess, a combo fast that I conduct is dry, and once a day. I dry fast all day (no liquids) then I have my low calorie meal for the 24 hour period.

Water fasts are too much for me, I prefer not to do them personally. But if they work for someone they should do it, because dry fasting don't work for everyone either. So, to answer your question regarding the activity during a water fast depends upon the individual. I believe whatever works for you should easily incorporate daily exercise.

I HTH Goodluck!!!

Hi Epiphany,

Just to clarify you dry fast everyday then eat a low cal meal once a day. You are an inspiration. I really could use more inspiration. I need to lose at least 55 more lbs. I have already lost 25lbs. And I would love to me skinny by my bday in June!

Hi Mich.. you have "done" 25 lbs (That's about 10 kilograms I gather) so something is working for you. It tends to be best to stick with something as long as it works, only change when it stops working.

Now the definition of "working" may be different: Losing weight, feeling good, still liking what you eat or not eat, not having severe cravings, etc..

Remember however that if you eat within every 24 hour period, you are on a diet, not really a fast. I also dry fast weekly, at least 40 hours but would NOT withhold water if a real thirst indicates a need.

I also think Epiphany has an excellent piece of advice: What works for you..

I concur with Andre, Mich you should continue to keep doing what you're doing to keep getting what you're getting and that is RESULTS!!! You WILL be skinny (blush) by or before your bday in June Mich.

Plus, I consider my combo method as fasting because I'm not eating or drinking for a total of 23 hours to say the least, so I count while I'm asleep and awake. It only takes me less than 30 minutes to consume a 500 calorie lowfat, lowcarb, no sugar meal.

Good Luck to everybody!!!! Remember you have to do what works best for you, its all trail and error, but never give up on finding that perfet method for you.

Re:Fasting has beautiful benefits 1 Year, 1 Month ago
I started out with juice for 14 days and then switched to water, so I have been water fasting for 21 days. I feel great but I am sometimes on an emotional roller coaster. I will continue my fast until my body tells me to stop. I was hoping for 40 days and then fast for 40hrs/week with one full week a month. And when I start to refeed I will follow Dr. Fuhrman's ETL plan.

Thanks for the encouragement! I really needed it.

Great, Mich. Just please don't let record setting become your goal. There's always the risk that you might suppress biofeedback because you have pre-decided on a time frame. I recall a death in South Africa of a person trying to do a 40 day fast simply to imitate Jesus.

Remember that fasting causes mobilization of toxins; we still need to eliminate them also to get the real benefit. Since we live in a much more toxic world than 2000 years ago, there are inherent dangers to passive fasting and peroforming active elimination (primarily via sweat glands) makes fasting considerably safer.

It also remains a guideline for my patients that we do regular checkups during extended fasts (more than a week), which include some blood tests, to make sure we do not damage in particular the heart muscle.

Ephiphany,

Thanks so much for your kind words! Please when you get a chance post your before picture. I would really love to compare. Here is the link www.drfuhrman.com/

It consists of eating greens as you main dish, with lots of veggies, fruits and beans and whole grains. No dairy, animal meat, sugar, coffee, etc. Using only plant-proteins.

I actually broke my fast last night with watered down oj.

DOC, Thanks for all your advice. I did not intend to do this fast just to reach 40 days. I know that I have lots of toxins that need to be released and thought that I would continue as long as I could. I am going in for bloodwork Friday, so I will let you know my results. Also, I have been following your five step elimination cycles at least once a day if not two and have been exercising everyday. I will begin refeeding slowly with fruits, veggies and soups. I intend to start my 40 hour fast Sunday night. Do you think that is a good time to fast or should i continue to refeed longer?

Thanks,

Mich

I usually recommend the next 30-60 hour fast withing 4-7 days from breaking a longer fast, so as to keep the fasting metabolism "current". And I never eat more than 6 days in a row.. also in order to keep the catabolism active, kind of "on standby".. once you have remained anabolic for about 2 weeks, your body "forgets how" to fast. The lipolytic enzymes (those converting fat back to energy) tends to disappear if not "called upon" for this period of time.

So by all means, Mich, go for your 40 hours on Sunday!

What happened? Apparently Epiphany was unhappy about my indication that real fasting implies the absence of taste and external energy for more than 24 hours, but also that there is no real "right" and "wrong": Only guidelines within which we have to listen to our biofeedback.

It's a difficult tightrope to walk.. between rigidity and dogmatism on the one side, and laissez-faire on the other. But I am proud to have noted that in one single post I was criticized for being both of these opposites.. that should imply being on target, I guess.

Wow. That seems a little harsh. I am sorry you left the site over that. I read the comments below and I hear nothing but love and support. I took his comment completely differently. And the one from the Doctor is not even to you - it's to Mich.

Hon, if this site were for "only the perfect", I think I would be somewhere else. Far, far away. So far away it has not only a different zip/postal code, but a different continent.

Again, sorry to see you are gone! I would have liked to see your before and after pics! I need inspiration on my 4 week (which is how I got to this post in the first place)

Well you're really welcome here Kimberley, and we're happy that you don't expect perfection here. So, actually from a different continent & at 1am, please don't hesitate to share with us your concerns & experiences; it would be an honour to help within our limitations!
