      Hello Everyone how's it going?

Andrew has kindly offered to take over moderation today as I will be off for weekend, but will be back in touch Sunday night.

Test Question: What is the difference between ketosis and autolysis?

      Thanks armadillojo your answer is:

"Autolysis is self-digestion. Ketosis is the process of burning of fatty acids as opposed to carbohydrate fuel."

      And Andrew's response:

"Ketosis is when the body is providing all it's energy and nutritional needs from it's own stores (fat cells). The ketones are produced from part of the fat cell and provide energy for the body. Ketones can be produced on a calorie restricted diet, but full ketosis is the term generally used for the condition that only water or dry fasting can produce. Ketones on their own do not provide full nutrition for the body, but in full ketosis the body 'takes control' and thrives for as long as it has the stores to do so. This is the difference between fasting and starving.

Autolysis goes beyond ketosis, but often happens during ketosis. Autolysis is where the body cannibalises it's own flesh to create new flesh. The body breaks down part of itself to repair another part. Drop-tail lizards are a good example of this, they fast when they lose their tails and it is the process of autolysis that builds the new flesh. This goes on all the time during a long term fast- the linings of the entire digestion system can be replaced if needed, the skin is repaired and damage parts of it replaced, etc. The body is better able to make this process happen and repair damage to itself using autolysis than while diverting valuable energy to digestion."

      Thanks Andrew great answer!
