  • Elimination cycles / Active Fasting/5-step detox cycle

    In a nutshell, at least twice daily, try to perform the following steps in short succession:

    1. Dynamic: Try to push your pulse rate up to (200 minus your age);
    2. Tonic: WHILE the heart is still beating fast, massage this excess circulation into your skin (the main elimination organ during fasting);
    3. Pyrophase: WHILE this excess circulation is still in the skin, activate the sweat glands in a sauna, steam room, hot bath or shower.;
    4. Criophase: Cool down your skin to re-ropute the now "filtered" blood circulation back to the internal organs: Cold shower, plunge pool or allow the sweat to evaporate.
    5. Stabilization: Now rest until you feel up to facing the next cycle.. or have to go to work. or just go to bed.

    you should be able to do the whole cycle at home:

    If there's stairs at home, you can run up them a few times to get the blood circulation going. Stop just before you trip over your tongue.

    The massage step can simply be rubbing yourself all over with a rough towel, a loufa, brush, a personal massage machine, or if you attach a shower extension to an ordinary water outlet, you can do a type of "Kneipp" hosing down massage on yourself: Train a water jet on your skin in transverse movements starting at the periphery (Hands/feet) and work up towards the core of the body.

    Then spending time in a very hot bath or shower will perform the heat phase;

    Turning the shower cold or getting out of the hot bath and allowing evaporation to dry you should suffice for the cold phase.

    Last step: If there's a bed in your house, you can do the rest phase on that.. otherwise a sofa should be OK..

    A professional massage for the second step is of course ideal, but not very practical in everyday life.

    Meditating: When your body rebels around the 8th day, it's obviously trying to tell you something.. heed its messages. Remember that a well activated fasting metabolism remains at least partly active for several days after you broke the fast so it "restarts" really easily. I actually consider the resumption of a fast less than about 10 days after a previous one to be a continuation rather than a new fast. Checking for ketones in the urine proved that the "switch" happens a lot earlier under these circumstances.

    So one or 2 days per week, plus 5 or 6 weeks per year, gives you over 80 fasting days per year.. that's enough for maintenance. I use longer fasts much more for specific healing of diseases and the short intermittent ones for "maintenance" or a "service" of your vehicle: Your precious body.

  • Will my skin shrink after losing weight?

    Whether your skin will shrink depends somewhat on how you chose your parents (Genes).. some people's shrink and others not. Plastic surgeons make more money out of the latter group.

    If you have stretch marks it is unlikely the skin will shrink back, as the basal collagen has been damaged. But regular fasting often helps it over time.

    Now I believe in active fasting, and that's what I practice and administer. Just returned from a few miles hike/jog in our game reserve,(stirred up our antelope guarding their newborn) after more than 40 hours "on air", had some water.. . So that was followed by a kind of massage and sweat treatment and of course now the notion of food is not inviting at all.

    I fast primarily to slow down the aging process. Losing weight can be a side effect in some people but the prime idea is to get healthier.. and when you are healthier, your weight tends to look after itself.

  • Master Cleanse: Down side

    What I know about "Master cleanse", however, is just enough to be sure I will never do it. The substances in the prescribed concoction are prone to induce low blood sugar and prevent you from going catabolic. I am not surpised that it brings about these symptoms.

  • Does Fasting Lower Blood Pressure?

    It sounds like a blood pressure issue, which is normal during a fast. Fasting lowers blood pressure and those fasting often experience what is called orthostatic hypotension. This means that your blood pressure drops whenever your body has been at rest and you begin to move.

    It isn't anything to be alarmed about but you do need to understand that it is happening and be mindful about it. Whenever you have been at rest either lying down or sitting still, try to remember to stretch really well before you get up and to rise slower than you normally would. This will allow your blood pressure to adjust so you don't feel dizzy all the sudden. If you catch yourself feeling dizzy don't panic. You can slowly drop to one knee, as if you were doing a half-squat, and give it a few seconds and it will pass.

    During my first 2 Master Cleanses this happened often. On my first fast this happened once or twice when I would wake up in the morning and then I put a big sign next to bed to remind me to stretch. My last fast, it didn't happen at all and so far this fast it hasn't happened either.

    I am really amazed at how quickly the body adjust to fasting. It does seem to know what it is doing.

  • Do We Need Sugar While Water Fasting?

    Remember when you go catabolic (ketotic) you actually become sugar independent as your body can then derive all its energy from fats. This is particularly welcome in diabetics who can often get an "insulin holiday" not needing any injections.

  • How To Know When To Break Fast?

    Fasting to "completion" is generally described as fasting until the appetite returns and the tongue clears. Unfortunately, although these may occur after short fasts for acute illnesses, these classical symptoms occur only rarely in long fasts. They are not good signs to use when determining when to break a fast. There are numerous other signs that indicate when a fast should be broken and long fasts should be conducted under the care of a Professional Natural Hygienist who will be familiar with them.
    Fasting for three to four days during mild, acute illnesses can be done on one's own. This period could possibly be extended to a week by those who have previously undergone long fasts without any complications under supervision. Otherwise, fasting should be done under supervision. If, while undertaking a short fast on one's own, unusual symptoms occur, or a situation develops that prevents breaking the fast early, a Professional Natural Hygienist should be consulted. This point is very important. There are all too many examples of people who, thinking fasting is always simple and straightforward, undertake a long unsupervised fast and get into trouble.

  • Can I Fast To Lose Weight?

    It is acceptable to begin a new lifestyle with a fast to lose weight as long as the fast is broken properly and the individual follows it up with a proper program of diet and exercise.
    Fasting to lose weight without making any lifestyle changes is worse than a waste of time. Without the lifestyle changes, the person quickly regains the weight lost during the fast in the form of fat.

  • Will I Be Hungry During A Fast?

    The desire to eat is dictated by a combination of physiological and psychological factors. It is thought that hunger is triggered by the activity of certain brain cells within the "appetite center" of the hypothalamus which respond to the blood glucose level.
    During fasting, the body begins to burn fat as a fuel, and the appetite center becomes temporarily desensitized to blood glucose. This makes it possible to fast without a gnawing hunger.
    Most people report little desire for food while fasting. They do not have a powerful, overwhelming urge to eat. This helps make it possible for most people to fast comfortably for several weeks or longer.

  • What does catabolic and anabolic mean?

    When your body is using food as a fuel source then your body is in an anabolic state. When you have switched over to using fat as a fuel supply, then you are in a catabolic state.
    After you have fasted for 24 hours, you begin to change from being anabolic to catabolic.

    In fasting circles, the term is used to mean you are burning stored fat for energy. In others circles, the term may mean you are using fat but not necessarily stored fat as a food source. I have also seen the term used to refer to those foods that when digested burn up more energy than they supply.

    On the topic of being catabolic: If you produce ketones, you are catabolic. You can easily check this with a simple urine dipstick. many diabetics use these.
