TOPIC: Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting?

Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting? 1 year, 5 months ago #5047

Good morning/afternoon.

Well I am back, with all your wonderfull help I had a good 2 weeks fast 2 months ago. Since then I've changed my nutrition, heavily influenced by the low-carb/paleo diet approach (also inline with Weston price/Nourishing Traditions/Sally Fallon if you know this approach) and I am ready for a small one week or two week fast. Just started this morning, and I'm putting into practice the approach of active fasting!

I have 3 questions:

One is about mineral loss, should I concern myself about it? I've come across this Doctor Batmanghelidj who talks about a watercure with sea salt:

For every quart of water you drink, it is necessary to add 1/4 teaspoon of salt (not table salt). It is recommended that you use either RealSalt® (all natural sea salt) or Celtic Sea Salt, which has approximately 80 minerals.

I have been using Hymalayan salt since a couple of weeks ago, so I would use this one.

Second I've been incorporating Coconut oil in my nutrition for its many health benefits, among which being a medium-lenght-chain fatty acid, which doesn't need to be digested and is used directly as fuel. Can I take it during the fast (I also take cod liver oil) either by ingestion or rubbing it in?

This article combines some salt with coconut oil while fasting:

www.coconut-oil-central.com/coconut-oil-detox.html

www.curemanual.com/detox-protocols-and-t...n-coconut-oil-detox/

And lastly this article mentions ''Lemons and limes are natural detoxifiers and help cleanse the liver'' Would that perturb the stomach shutdown?

Thanks for your thoughts on this!
Guy

Re: Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting? 1 year, 5 months ago #5050

And thank you, Guy, for the thought provoking ideas!

I for one will always follow a high carbohydrate diet as carbohydrate is the only "primary" food and our natural source of energy. All proteins and fats are derived from carbohydrates either directly or indirectly, so I consider them to be partly degraded carbohydrates.

Never in my 30 plus years of fasting did I take any minerals. Not while fasting nor while eating. The only exception was Zinc, about 5 tablets over the past 20 years. Salt remains Sodium Chloride, not even a nuclear reaction can change that.. so whether it comes from the sea or a mine, there's preciously little difference. I am a bit scared of sea salt nowadays due to the mercury buildup in the oceans. Overall, however, I limit my salt intake and never add salt to food.

Coconut oil definitely needs to be digested before your body can assimilate it... just think of how you would react if you were to infuse coconut oil directly into the blood stream! It is made up largely of medium chain fatty acids; your intestine absorbs primarily short chains.

It is still beyond my comprehension of pysiology how anything "taken in" can help with detoxification. Nor can I fathom how lemons and limes would get to the liver to cleanse it. And yes, the taste will definitely "recall" the stomach from its "holiday".

Forgive me for speaking/writing my mind, but I cannot get myself off the pure natural ways.. will never use "supplements" and will always fast totally taste free, like I have been doing at least once a week for over 30 years.

Hello André

Thank you for speaking your mind! This is why I come back for your experience, I like getting it straight.

There is a lot of companies always wanting to sell us something. You make me think of what fasting was like through the centuries before all these supplements. Like you say why would taking in something help.....

Ok so I got that straight.

Maybe one more question, I want to really get into active fasting (to go against all the ideas that fasting makes you weak), so I drink a lot of water and do mini-trampoline cardio (I know it sounds funny), about 15 minutes in the morning and in the evening, enough to get my heart beating and a gentle good sweat, followed by the brushing/massaging/shower.

So twice a day, am I pushing it? I do it out of enjoyment but also feeling sending a message to my body that this is an active fast.....

What do you think?
Thanks Guy

Re: Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting? 1 year, 5 months ago #5054

Guy, it's great to see you back here! I loved following your fast! I just read about Himalayan salt this morning and worried that it might have things like Fluoride, which I would not want in my body... I think it's crap that it's in drinkng water in the US and in salt in many European countries. Do people even know?

I'm sticking with Andre's recommendation to not use supplements, nutrients, or intakes other than water although I did have to taste my children's food last night to ensure they would eat it and I of course washed my mouth out and spit it out immediately. It was not THAT tempting but you know. Their dad is much more into salting the heck out of their food and honestly, the kids don't seem to eat unsalted food. We don't let them eat food at daycare.

It's funny how we both started a couple of months ago and we're both back on board with the fast. I admired you for doing 2 weeks. I am trying to make it at least 10 days and ideally, 21 days but keeping an open mind.

GOod luck!

Caroline

Regarding the salt - what was used back in the days of the folks who lived 700 years or something? Was it as purified as the salt that is made today? Just curious.

Re: Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting? 1 year, 5 months ago #5057

Hi Guy.. no twice a day sounds fine. We tend to hike in the mountains here for an hour to an hour and a half twice a day. The only prerequisite is that you listen to your body. Once in a blue moon a passive fast is just right for you.

If you want to be really meticulous, you could wear a pulse rate meter and just remain below (200 minus your age) although (180 minus your age) is recommended if maintained for any length of time.

And carolineq, I agree about the water quality.. problem is, the foods we eat were all irrigated by that water, and the same substances is concentrated thousands of times more in the food.. once in the body, there's no distinction where it came from.

Bear in mind the main substance in salt is Sodium Chloride, and once again when in the body it's immaterial what the source was. But yes, having a larger variety of minerals gives the body more options.. but I do not want to give my body lead or mercury!

The open mind thing is SO important to give your body a choice! Rather than decide beforehand how long a fast is going to be, always be ready to decide this was one of the shorter ones, and you can always start again. The total number of fasting days in a year, for example, is more important than those in a single episode.

Best of health.

André

About the foods we eat being contaminated with a concentration of contaminants 1000 times more that found in say, water, I have been reading about BPA and find that even though I try to use glass in everything, the processing of things such as organic condiment this or that, probably uses BPA in at least the lids of containers used. BPA, in spite of the bad press, is everywhere!

Anyway, don't want to hijack the thread to talk about BPA, but it really makes me want to eat what you stated... organic healthy leafy products, vegetables and just as simple as possible.

As far as quantity of exercise, I have found it's like putting coal in the furnace. I have felt exhausted and just done jumping jacks and run in place and boom, energy arrives for an hour or two.

Re: Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting? 1 year, 5 months ago #5066

Hello Caroline, Nice to meet you
Thanks André for the information!

Exercise does feel good, it does energises me when I do them!Going into my third day of water fasting!!!! and I feel excellent. I do 15 minutes of High Intensity Interval Aerobic Training on my trampoline in the morning and in the evening to get my heart pumping and a light/good sweat. (I bought a heart pulse-monitor watch) This is followed by a full body skin brush and a hot/cold shower to clean and stimulate my skin, which is one of the big detox organ.

I drink almost 4 liters of distilled water everyday, following my feelings. (it is very hot 30+c in Montréal) and I am not hungry, and I am already in good ketosis. I think fasting has become a misnomer, I rather call it now f(e)asting...feasting, because we are simply eating our reserves, mostly our stored fats. So I do water feasting.

This being my third fast I have so far no cleansing/toxic symptoms as headackes or pains...I just feel fine, water for cleaning and stored fats for feasting. ) My approach this time is Active f(e)asting, getting my blood flowing and cleaning my skin, and so far these keeps my energy optimal, I totally don't feel to lay around.....I even went kayaking yesterday! :

As far as Hymalayan salt ic comes from mines of ancient oceans millions of years ago, so hasn't been in contact with civilisation and it's polutants. It is regarded for it's 80+ trace minerals. Table salt is highly processed, even commercial sea salt is processed. You can read about it here: www.himalasalt.com/

I have 2 questions I would like your comments on. There are so many alarmist misconception about muscle wasting and mineral depletion. Are there any validity to them? Is it only a question of the lenght of the fast?

And is imsomnia part of the fasting process? In general I sleep 6 hours per night. I've been trying for years to make this longer but to no avail.... but during fasting it seems my sleep is even more perturbed, and I don't like laying around during the day to make up for night time.... any thoughts on sleeping and fasting?

Thanks again Caroline and André!

Thanks Guy, for some interesting remarks!

1. Muscle wasting: Sure if you eat muscles before a fast and then don't use your muscles during the fast, your body gets the message that muscles are redundant and meant to be digested and used for energy.

2. Don't count sleep hours. Some people fare quite well on 2 hours per episode, some need 14. The biological episode is once per 25 hours (not 24) on average. You might be catching up on an "overdraft" of either wake time or sleep time..

Re: Sea salt / Lemon /coconut oil while fasting? 1 year, 5 months ago #5074

Is there really much damage if you do burn muscles? Isn't it just as simple to rebuild afterwards?

How to Sleep Like DaVinci 1 year, 5 months ago #5075

Thank you both for your comments, always highly appreciated.

Yes sleeping cycles can vary a lot depending on individuals; here's an article on this: www.sleep-deprivation.com/articles/cause...polyphasic-sleep.php

And I went back to my strenght training yesterday, it felt great, even made a video of it!:

And yes muscles can simply be rebuilt after!!! so simple!!!!

I had a A-Ha moment last evening, I don't say I am fasting anymore, but that I am f(e)asting on fats... feasting on fats!!! Basically I have an internal feeding system and I am eating all the time whenever I want. I'm neither starving myself, depriving myself nor hungry! I'm eating the perfect portions whenever I need it, I just need to add water! Thanks to active fasting I burn enough fats at the right ratio for my activities. Thanks André for your inspiration and teachings!!!

I like your "feasting on fats" lingo... it's true! I feel like I am exhaling something like composted fat byproducts and as much as I don't want to annoy my workmate with body odor, I'm feeling slightly victorious in reaching this new fasting entity... I just dropped a pound lower than I did with my last fast with the intent to go several more days. I can't imagine that I am anywhere close to the end of my fast. Frankly, I don't have cravings for a single ONE pure food and I've still got some hunks of flesh to feast on.

As for sleeping, I was going to say, it seem fasting does trigger production of stress hormones and that might be part of the reason you can't sleep... also, conservation of energy from digestion --> less need from sleep. I have a nervous sleep energy that I can only shake when exercising.

Sadly, I haven't been doing too much active fasting this time... no time, --- with work and mommying, I have not found it. BUt I'm going to go for a run this morning and start active fasting before all the running muscles I built up over the last 1.5 months get consumed.

Good luck, today!

Re: How to Sleep Like DaVinci 1 year, 4 months ago #5118

While I have read numerous times that lemons and limes help detoxify the body, I don't think I have ever read the reason why people believe that to be the case.

I always assumed they are widely regarding as agents of detoxification due to their antiseptic and diuretic properties.

I have also read they help regulate blood sugar too, but it is hard to determine what is a reliable source anymore.

Re: How to Sleep Like DaVinci 1 year, 4 months ago #5140

Excellent remarks dear Meditating.. I will always maintain that nothing you put INTO your body takes anything OUT.. so the only real detoxifying "food" is nothing at all. Pure water fasting will help liberate toxins from the tissues, and then you just need to get them out of the body also.. that's why we always combine fasting with Hydrotherpy cycles..
