TOPIC: Feeding the Animal Within

Feeding the Animal Within 2 years, 1 month ago #4218

I was poking around and came across a very interesting website.

This man decided, 2 (oops 3!) years ago, to eat primally. Personally, I think he eats WAY too much meat, which was less prevalent for our ancestors than he seems to think, but I enjoyed some of the logic and reasoning behind his motives.

It's not scientific, obviously. It's his ideas, experience, and opinions. In actuality, it's closer to a natural version of Atkins. Having said all that, enjoy!

Be sure to check out the parts on washing without soap and shampoo! I haven't used soap or cleansers on my face in about 20 years, and i have found a profound difference in my complexion vs. some of my peers.

I feel very well when I eat heavy greens, little fruit, no starches, and rare, red meats, which I tried for about 2 months. But I am really working on eating 99.9% lacto(goat)-ovo)vegetarian diet for a variety of reasons.

I haven't used any hair care products for 2 years and my hair looks much better (except for when I was in my twenties). Twice yearly I have a stylist cut my hair and she agrees my hair looks better.

I use small amounts of goat soap when I shower if I have engaged in really grimy activity. I dry brush regularly and use a salt/sugar scrub once monthly. Most people think I am 10-15 years younger than I am because of the condition of my skin. It is amazing how we have been conditioned to believe we need these products in order to be clean.

Meditating,

What do you use on your hair, and how long after you stopped using hair care products did it take for your hair to look good? I have such an oily scalp, that I can't imagine not using shampoo; yet my hair is so dry, I have to use conditioners. Additionally, I started going gray at 16, and at 35 my hair is so dull and gray.

Re:Feeding the Animal Within 2 years, 1 month ago #4223

My "no poo" experience was in line with everything I read. I too had dry hair with an oily scalp, which proved to be caused by using shampoo and conditioners.

Shampoo strips your scalp of its natural oils so your body compensates for this loss by pumping out extra oil after a shampoo. After you stop using shampoo, your scalp will eventually stabilize. When I would shampoo, I had to wash my hair every other day due to oil. Now, I can go 5 days easy in our humid summers and 10 days in the winter between washing with water and oil is never a problem. The lack of natural oil after a shampoo is why so many people have to use conditioner afterward.

I did not think I would be able to get through my oily hair when I first stopped using hair care products. My head felt like an oil-drenched rag for 2 weeks. I used the hottest water on it I could stand but that didn't seem to help much either. I also rinse with a water/vinegar combo sometimes with a drop of lavender oil in it. The vinegar smell goes away quickly and it will kill any fungus/dandruff you might have. I just like the smell of lavendar.

If you can stick with it 2 weeks, you should be fine. If I do something really grungy or sweat a lot, I will use a small amount of a natural goat's milk bar soap on my hair, but it is rare.

Also, I have a filter on my shower and that makes a really BIG difference for both your skin and hair. Chlorine is a no-brainer. I use a wide tooth comb after I shower and then remove some moisture with a towel but I let my hair dry naturally in the bed. I don't use a blow dryer, which will make your hair dry too.

One last thing, if you do a final rinse hair in the coldest water you can stand, this will make your hair shinier and stronger. The hair has a cuticle that lays on it kind of like fish scales. Cold water makes the cuticles lay flat against the hair shaft, which gives it a shinier appearance because it becomes smoother and reflects more light. This makes the hair less porous so it will be stronger.

At the time I stopped using hair care products, I was also getting rid of all unnatural cleaning products. I am amazed at what I can clean perfectly fine with baking soda, vinegar, and orange oil. From those experiences I learned that so much of what we are led to believe we need in this modern world is a bunch of crap and just a way to separate us from our hard-earned money.

That's so true, Meditating. I use mostly natural cleaners, too, and have for years, however, in a house this old, I do one environmentally unfriendly necessity: I use Soft Scrub with Bleach on occasion. I have had the same bottle since moving in, but I needed it for the unused tub and shower upstairs.

As for the shampoo, I have also purchased and prepared yucca root for my hair, AND used baking soda like a dry shampoo. Both work wonders!

My newest cleaning discovery is salt. I had some baking dishes that had a light coating of grease that would not come off no matter what I did and then by fiance was doing dishes and showed me how if you mix a generous amount of (kosher) salt with a little (eco-friendly) dish soap, that the salt takes off the worst grease stains. All of my baking sheets and baking dishes look like new! I even tried it in the oven and it worked. I was amazed that I never heard of trying that.

I have heard of using salt but never tried it. Do you know if it the abrasive quality that works so well or is there some other reason?

Re:Feeding the Animal Within 2 years, 1 month ago #4233

My fiance thinks that the salt absorbs the grease, but he's not completely sure. I'm sure the abrasiveness helps too, but it didn't seem like it was necessary to scrub super-hard. Using a lot of salt seemed to be the key element. Mixing with a little dish soap just seems to help it stay together but not completely necesary.

Soooo, my hair is gray, very dry looking and well, I went without shampooing it for a few days and I too noticed much improvement.

However, since working out for long periods, I'm a little squeamish about not washing it completely, but I'm glad to have found some of the recommendations here.

As for the gray, no clue what to do... it is quite obvious... I've really gotten gray over the last years since children, but so have my brothers so it's got to be genetics. My sister who is 42, has very little, lucky duck!

As for the house cleaning agents, I had been using Comet (which I thought was mostly just bleach), but discovered it is laden with pesticide... for the love of God!

Anyway, I am interested in trying this new recommendation of vinegar, baking soda, and salt... thanks guys!!!

Anybody use toothpaste or go without? I do think flossing is important, but I don't know that we need all that paste... just discovered last week that Triclosan is in Colgate... again ... for the LOVE OF GOD!

Here is where I go to deal with gray hair: www.mehandi.com/

Read her incredible ebook. You will learn everything you need to know.

Once you have lots of gray, you might want to add hi and low lights. Than the gray is mottled in and roots aren't a problem. Also, the henna and indigo products cover gray and they don't fade like the chemical crap.
