      juice fasting-day12 - 22/02/2007 06:45
Hiya everyone. This is my 6th juice fast. I typically do them once a year to cleanse. I am pretty healthy (relative term) but I am a hard core vegetarian and anti-drug/medicine and I don't do conveniance foods. I do however enjoy a glass of wine fairly often ;( Hence my need for the fast.

I simply like the idea of giving my digestive system a break for so long and OH...the weight ;)...I like that too. Now, I am 5'7" and weighed 146lbs before day 1. I am today at day 12 and still at 138lbs!!! (have been there for 4 days!!!!) Do you know how frustrating this is???
I have once tried a fast for the weight loss alone but unless your mind is in the right place, this wasn't motivation enough for me. I am very keen though (I am after all on day 12!) I have had nothing but lemon water (2-3 litres a day), and approx. 1 litre of juice per day. Granted they are somewhat sweet (peppers and oranges, apples & cucumbers, pineapple and carrott (this one is GORGEOUS!!)) I have some veggie only but can't do the 1 litre a day on that ;( For the first time last night, I had some vegetable broth (which I made...NO salt, fats or anything...just the water from cooked vegetables).

Now, I am hoping that my imminent period is the reason for the lack in weight loss (does anyone know if it is typical NOT to have your period on a liquitarian diet?) BUT, my goal was to make it down to 130lbs. I typically put 2lbs back on when I start eating so I don't want to stop now. However, I am going out of town this weekend and short of lugging my green power juicer with me, I think I need to come off on Saturday;(

-Would love to hear your input! (cause I can't really talk about it here...people think you're nuts unless they know that you know what you're talking about...of course, I have no interest in convincing those that I know more than them and then talk to them about my challenges!!)
      Cheers,
      Rach

What an admirable feat! Congratulations so far.

Concerning weight loss: During the start of a fast one typically lose about 1-2 litres (kgs) of water. This comes back when you start eating again. However, on a fruit or juice diet this should not occur.

I have been fruitarian for years.. I do NOT consider a fruit or juice diet to be a fast. After all, you could not reason that I've been fasting for years on end! Whenever your tongue reports TASTE to your brain, the brain manages the body as if eating normally.. and whether the juice was extracted from the fruit outside or inside the body, makes no metabolic difference.

One can gain weight on a fruit diet. After all, if you look at typical fruitarian animals like gorillas or pigs, they do gain weight while on their natural diet. The bottom line is ENERGY: If you ingest more energy than what you put out, you will gain weight. Your body can (and does) make fat from fruit or juice, if you deliver more energy (measured in calories or joules) than what your body use.

It might be a good idea if you have the opportunity, to have your basal metabolism rate measured. We usually do that by measuring oxygen uptake.

One typical reason for not losing weight (fat) is that your body contains fat soluble toxins, dissolved in the fats.. if you were to break these down, the toxins so released will make you ill. The symptoms can vary greatly, from fatigue to headaches, to hypersomnia to insomnia and from elation to depression. To "avoid" these, your body often "hangs on" to the fats in order for the toxins not to be released. The risk is then that you might start buring muscle (protein) instead. This is why we always combine elimination Hydrotherapies with fasting, so that the released toxins can be carried out of the body.

Please do ask any specific quiestions or raise any specific concerns you still have.. I'd love to be able to help!
