      Introduction

      —MEDICINE & DISEASES—

Often diseases or their symptoms are cured not because of, but in spite of medication. Prompted by popular demand and the chance of making some money on the deal, pharmaceutical companies develop chemicals at an admirable rate. The majority of those eventually registered as medicines, aim mainly at alleviating the presenting symptoms. That is, after all, what the patient expects and “the client is always right!”

Should one keep in mind, however, that the symptom very often actually represents the body's way of coping with the underlying cause, counteracting the symptom could aggravate the disease process. Therefore, some of the biggest CAUSES of:

      * Repeated infection, is antibiotics * Headache, is analgesics (“pain-killers”); * Insomnia, is narcotics (“sleeping pills”) and alcohol; * Constipation, is laxatives.

Dietary “drugs” can have comparable effects, such as coffee causing tiredness, sugar causing hypoglycaemia, etc.

For these and some other reasons, Natural Therapy often causes the symptom to worsen initially by working with instead of against it. This might sound ridiculous but enhancing the underlying process that the body has activated, will ultimately hasten recovery. Fever, for example, often (though not always) is induced by the “thermostat” in the brain: When the central nervous system becomes aware of an infection by a heat sensitive organism, it will adjust the temperature upwards in order to make life difficult for the germ. The temperature is further increased by the “fight” going on between the body and the invader.

If medicine is effective in “breaking” the fever, how else could it have been, but by the suppression of the process of healing that the body activated? If one would rather work parallel with the symptom, instead of against it, is it not more probable that the cause will be eliminated?

Note: Distinguishing between natural immune reaction and pathologically disrupted physiological functioning, is a formidable task. It should not be done by unqualified or inappropriately qualified people. Currently the only qualification representing adequate training to reliably distinguish these, is that of the medical profession. Unfortunately habits and pressure from patients, as well as lack of suitable facilities, often force doctors to treat symptoms. The idea of the following examples is therefore not to criticize, but to indicate how, using the right facility in the right way, an additional (not necessarily alternative) healing mechanism can be employed to assist in dealing with various common ailments.
