Hi everyone - I am so grateful for all of you that are here and that have been here before to offer advice and support. I've embarked on my first water fast and am thrilled I've made it to day three, but I still feel HORRIBLE! I have a nagging headache, am weak and very, very hungry. My stomach is growling all the time. I am fortunate that I have a blood pressure machine at home and my blood pressure is fine, but my resting heart rate is 96 - should I be concerned about that? It's been fluctuating between 88 and 96 since yesterday when I first started measuring it. I went into ketosis yesterday - the stick is as purple as it gets, so that's encouraging, but I am wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of this terrible headache and hunger? I've been resting, taking baths and meditating, but nothing helps. Too weak to do the active fasting right now.

I'm fasting to overcome some nasty side effects I got from taking the antibiotic Levaquin - they were getting worse and I've heard they can eventually be debilitating - scary! I'm hoping I caught the process soon enough that I can rid my body of that poison.

Many thanks for your help and support - I am hoping to make it at least 10 days, but am listening to my body.

Dear icandoit headaches are one of those really difficult things to deal with when your body is dumping a load of toxins. I get them too sometimes when I have been living excessively. And I know that they are no laughing matter. When mine kick in I just curl up and rest, but one thing that has helped in the past is exercising my calf muscles by either jumping up and down on the spot or up and down on my tiptoes. Don't fully understand the mechanism, but guess it helps with lymph flow and also circulation. Some people say that the calf muscles are a second heart. Hope you feel better today.

Oh and I forgot to mention that when it is really bad, I get a friend or my son to give me an Indian Head Massage and that really helps.

Thanks so much David for your great advice. I had a really crazy experience last night - I think it may have been a healing crisis. I had meningitis a few years ago and it felt like I had it again last night. I had a terrible headache and a fever of 100.8 - felt exactly like meningitis. I was starting to get worried, but thought it's probably part of the healing that the fast is doing. My fever broke today, but I still have the headache. I also started my period (probably TMI) - but I'd like to know, is it OK to contunue fasting while I'm menstruating?
Thanks again for all of your help - I feel a bit isolated and confused going through this for the first time.

Menstruation per se should not be a contra indication to fasting. Actually many girls cope a lot better with a period while fasting.

Temperature of 100.8, well, that's 38.2 degrees Centigrade (the scale best understood in medical circles and internationally).. not very high but adequate to give you a bit of meningismus. That is an irritation of the meningeal membranes. Remember such irritation can be caused by radiation, temperature (fever), injury, tumours, severe g-forces, chemicals, air (like post lumbar puncture) etc... and does not necessarily indicate meningitis (inflammation of the membranes by infections such as bacteria or viruses).

Always remember: Fasting MOBILIZES your toxins, you still need to ELIMINATE them.. so doing active fasting is almost always easier, safer and causes less symptoms than the passive variety.

Thanks Dr. I was not exercising before the fast, so do you have any suggestions for how I can safely be active during the fast? Don't want to overdo it. At this point, I haven't been able to get out of bed - my head hurts too much and I'm very nauseous. I want to stick with it because I'm obviously very toxic, but this is so uncomfortable I'm not sure I'll make it much longer without relief.
Thanks for your help!

Bear in mind "Exercise" is relative: For some people it is getting out of a chair, for some it is running a marathon. The principle of the first step of the elimination cycle (as described several times in these forums) is to generate a bit of excess circulation which can then be massaged into the skin (carrying the toxins to the sweat glands) in order to be eliminated (sweated out). Just waiting for the toxins to leave seldom helps..

Should the pains be too severe to do any elimination activities, it is sometimes justified to postpone the pain with drugs such as Paracetamol (Acetaminophen). In these cases one could argue that the negative impact of the drug is justified by the positive impact of detox.

If course if the symptoms are intolerable, the best route is to abort the current fast and give it another go within less than a week. But this time, start doing elimination cycles even before starting the fast, in order to keep the concentration of toxins in circulation below the "threshold" where they cause your pains.

I remember my first fast. A few days into it I was really sick. This is a hard time but so worth it because when you get through the first detox, it is not like that again for most people who fast occasionally thereafter.

I don't mean to imply that it can't be that bad again because you might burn up some fat cells with really bad crap in them, but most accounts seem to indicate the worse may about to be over during your first fast.

Good luck and just try to get through it. You will be surprised how much better you feel afterward.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I decided to break the fast - I just couldn't take the headache, it was excruciating. I am going to do a slower detox of fruits and vegetables and hopefully work up to another water fast when my body is less toxic. I'm happy with making it 5 days on my first time.
Thanks again for your help!

Fasting can be difficult, especially the first fast. You did much better than the majority of people, who I suspect bail before the end of the first day. In all honesty, I have done that myself.

Your next fast may be less difficult if you take a slow detox of raw foods and juices first. Many people find this to be the right solution for them.
